Working Structure Fire

At 05:44 hours on Saturday May 25th a box alarm was transmitted for a possible structure fire at 305 Howard Avenue in Pottsville. Assistant Chief George Stefnic (P3) arrived on scene first, reporting a working structure fire. The structure was a semi attached 2-1/2 story home of wood frame construction. One of the residents was in the street being tended to by Pottsville EMS and PD for cuts to the face/head and possible smoke inhalation. On arrival it was reported that one person was unaccounted for.

Ladder 51 (West End) was the first apparatus on scene, they setup on side A of the structure and advanced a 1-3/4” attack line into the basement which was located at street level. Engine 41 (Good Will) laid in from the hydrant in the 200 block of Howard and supplied water to L-51. Ladder 21 (Phoenix) approached from the West on Howard Avenue, Engine 11 (Good Intent) setup behind E-41 at 2nd and Howard.

P5 (Messner) was on the first line into the structure and encountered heavy fire in the basement area which was a living space with furniture. Divisions 1 and 2 were heavily charged with smoke as crews from E-41, E-11, and E-62 made a primary search of the structure and began ventilation of the upper floors. The fire was quickly knocked down with the line from L-51 and primary fire damage was contained to the basement of the structure. There was heavy smoke damage to the upper floors. Crews performed a secondary search of the structure as the fire was knocked down with no victims found. It was later confirmed that the unaccounted resident was not in the home at the time of the fire.

Schuylkill Haven RIT was called to the scene as well and staged on side A of the structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Narritive by P2 (Witmier) & Pictures courtesy of Yorkville Hose Facebook page.
