Mutual Aid – Working Structure Fire

11/28/2012 – At 06:32hrs stations 20 & 60 were dispatched to assist Port Carbon Fire Department at 231 Coal Street for a reported structure fire. As Port Carbon’s Chief 59 was en-route, he saw a large column of smoke which prompted him to hit his second alarm assignment which then brought stations 10 & 30 from the city as well. Port Carbon’s engine was the first on scene and had heavy smoke and fire showing from the structure. They immediately place attack lines in service to start knocking down the fire. When PFD units arrived on scene, L-21 immediately placed their ladder in service and went to the roof to vent, while crews from E-11, E-32 & R-63 assisted with fire attack. Due to the construction of the building, crews had to perform a lot of overhaul to check for extension and to extinguish the fire completely. PFD units remained on scene for approximately 6hrs. As units began responding, Schuylkill County Communications was reporting two people may be trapped on the third floor. As police, fire, and EMS personnel attended to the victims, a line was stretched from E-32 through the front door to attack the seat of the fire. A second line was used to the rear of the building to contain the fire running the exterior of the home. E-62 and E-41 supplied water to the scene via hydrants on Market Street and 16th Street. L-21 and L-51 worked on laddering the building and venting the roof. A primary search was conducted to check for any other occupants as crews worked to contain the fire. The two victims were flown to a trauma center for treatment of their injuries.
