July 26, 2009 – Working Row Home Fire
21:07hrs – All seven stations were dispatched to 810 N. 3rd Street for a reported house fire. First arriving units found heavy smoke venting from Divisions 1 & 2 Side A. Two 1 – 3/4” lines were pulled for the initial attack and one crew went to Division 1 and the other to Divison 2. As firefighters we knocking down the fire, smoke became visible from attics on either side of the fire building which prompted command to have the Schuylkill Haven Fire Department R.I.T team dispatched. Due to the building construction, the fire spread rapidly to Division 2 and to the exposures on each side of the fire building. Due to the aggressive interior attack, the bulk of the fire was held to two houses while others in the row just had smoke damage. Crews performed extensive overhaul of the main fire & exposure buildings. The last of the units on scene cleared at approximately 12:45hrs.

Working structure fire in a 3-story apartment building.  Heavy fire showing from window on side A, division 1.  Ladder 51 and Engine 11 arrived on scene first, quick knockdown by the crew from 51 with a 1-3/4″ handline in the front door.  Primary search and check for extension performed by crews from 11 and 62 on the second and third floors, nothing found.

Unfortunately there was a resident in the apartment where the fire started, and despite a quick response from the department, the fire had already taken the residents life.

Building was an older brick building.  The fire was venting out the first floor window on arrival, up to the second floor.  But the combination of the brick construction, and the new windows on the second floor, kept the fire from extending before it was knocked down.
