July 21, 2005 – Working Structure Fire
Mutual Aid: 40 Silver Creek Road (Blythe Twp.) , 17:50

Kaska, Cumbola,  New Philadelphia , and Port Carbon fire companies were dispatched to a possible structure fire on Silver Creek road.  Multiple calls on the fire were reporting a working fire.  Chief 54 arrived on scene assuming command and confirming a working fire in a 3-story wood frame double block home.  There was heavy fire showing on the first floor with a heavy smoke condition on the second floor upon arrival, with fire self venting out the first floor windows and front door.  Chief 54 called for a second alarm dispatching stations 10 and 70 from the City for a rapid intervention team (RIT).  Downed live wires on the 1/2 corner of the structure provided an additional challenge to firefighters operating on the scene.

Two 1-3/4″ hand lines were placed in service from the first arriving crews with one line in the fire building and one in the attached structure on side 4.  An aggressive interior attack was made on the building knocking down the main body of fire.  A third 1-3/4″ handline was stretched to knock down exterior fire on the main fire building after the initial attack crews came out.  Manpower was limited and with the intense heat and humidity fire ground operations became very difficult.  Crews were effective on attack, but required extended rehab before going back into service, thus limiting manpower.  The RIT team was established and remaining manpower was placed into service to provide vertical ventilation on the second and third floors.

Extension of the fire into the 3rd floor was difficult to reach due to debris and partial ceiling collapse on the second and third floors, so a crew was sent into exposure 4 to breach the wall on the upper floor and gain access to the remaining body of fire.  This operation was again draining on the available manpower so a third alarm was transmitted bringing additional manpower from station 30 in the City.  With the additional manpower the fire was brought under control and an extensive overhaul process was initiated.  At this point a fourth alarm was transmitted for station 2 in Schuylkill Haven to provide more manpower for overhaul and to supplement the RIT.

The incident was cleared around 22:00 hours.  There was one minor firefighter injury and multiple firefighters treated for heat exhaustion.  Pottsville and St. Claire EMS provided rehab on the scene throughout the incident.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

April 20, 2005 – Commercial Structure Fire & Working Structure Fire
It was a busy day for the Pottsville Fire Department. At 13:30 Stations 20, 50 & 60 were dispatched for a Commercial Structure Fire at the former Pottsville Bleach & Dye with fire reported in the basement. P-3 arrived on scene and reported a working commercial fire. He then dispatched stations 10 & 70 for additional manpower and for fire attack. As the fire continued to spread Port Carbons Chief requested a second alarm which then brought station 30 for water supply. Upon arrival E-32 laid 1,600ft of 5″ to supply E-71 & St. Clairs Tower 701 in the rear with a adequate
water supply.

After about 45min in to the call another structure was reported at 516 W. Mahantongo Street . P-1 arrived on scene and reported a working structure fire. Engines 11, 72 & 33 responded as well as Ladder 21. P-1 then requested additional units from Minersville, Mar-Lin, Schuylkill Haven, Cressona & Orwigsburg for additional manpower due to a majority of Pottsville’s manpower at the Port Carbon Fire.

March 9, 2005 – Working Structure Fire
Box 322 was struck at 13:44 hours for a reported structure fire at 516 West Mahantongo Street.  P3 arrived on scene in command reporting a working basement fire and requested the FAST team be dispatched from Schuylkill Haven.  P3 confirmed a working structure fire in a 4 story wood frame structure with attached structures on each side.  All three buildings are apartment buildings with four to five apartments in each.

Fireground was setup as follows:
L-51 and E-71 on side 1
E-62 on the 1/2 corner
E-32 on side 2
E-41 on side 3
L-21 and E-11 on 1/4 corner
Schuylkill Haven FAST team on scene at command post
Englewood FAST team also called in as Haven units were put into service for suppression assistance.
Ladder from Minersville called in to setup on the 2/3 corner.
Engine from Port Carbon and Sch. Haven called in to setup secondary water supplies.

Fire started in the basement of 516 and rapidly spread throughout the structure.  Fire extended into side 2 exposure (518) and caused heavy fire damage to the upper 2 floors with water damage to the lower floors.  The side 4 exposure suffered water and smoke damage but very little fire damage.

The initial attack was setup on 516 but crews were quickly pulled from the building due to the rapid fire spread which caused a collapse of the first and second floors in the center of the structure.  Crews operated in the side 2 and 4 exposures.  At one point an evacuation was called for the side 2 exposure due to instability of the roof and front upper dormer.  Eventually crews recommenced operations in that structure to bring the fire under control.  Crews operated off the roof of the side 4 exposure to stop the fire spread and knock down the fire in the collapsed portion of the fire building.

The Fire was declared under control at 18:30 hours with some units clearing the scene.  E-71 and L-51 still operating on mop up at 20:55 hours.

Audio files are presented in .wav format. The audio files are courtesy of the Schuylkill County Communications Center. The audio files have been edited to compress the file size; spaces of dead air or distorted communications have been erased. This will give the appearance of very rapid communications, but as many of us know the communications on a fire scene are not always this quick, it is just the format of the recordings. Note: There is mention of a missing member in the audio clips, the member was located and was not lost or trapped.
